About Me

My photo
Durham, NC
After graduating from the University of Mobile in 1985 I started a career as an artist. My life consisted of Easel painting, Murals, Trompe l'oeil and faux finishes. I did this for 18 years until reaching a point of creatively burning out. I painted nothing of substance for almost 7 years. In January of 2010 things happened to open my eyes to the beauty around me and a deep desire to paint again. This blog will be dedicated to my new work. Paintings that are for me and my pleasure and the pleasure of others and not for a pay check. My hope is that this will help to keep the work fresh and of true vision.

"Forgotten"

"Forgotten"
24 x 36
Acrylic on board

It seems that a couple on my coastal images have disappeared from my blog.  I'm not sure why.  The boat is still at Alligator Creek near the coast.  However it is no longer in the good of shape. Pity.

Frostbite Regatta 5 "Paradise Reach"

"Paradise Reach"

The feeling I get when I look at a sail boat is that the thing is alive! The movement on the water and the wind in the sails constantly create a moving living sculpture.  No two moments are ever the same and the transient images leave me with a touch of anxiety for the next one.  It’s art in motion.

Why boats?

When I see a boat moving through the water or sitting in a dry dock I sense something of the soul within it, sometimes even its ghosts.  The play of light and shadows; the sense of movement and mystery; these elements blend to become the core of my paintings.

So I guess I just cant help it!!

Quiet Moment

After the regatta in November I spent some time walking around the docks behind the “Provision Company” in Southport.  There is a whole world that exists, just at the water, which we never notice.  This painting tries to capture just a bit of that world.  I hope it lets us see into it a bit.  There is a great calm in this place.  That is where the title of the painting comes from.  “Quiet Moment”

Frostbite Regatta "Black Bow"

Black Bow
21 x 40
Acrylic on canvas

This is the second painting from the Frostbite Regatta in Southport NC. I was attracted to the way the bow of the boat created a void in front of it as it pushed through the water.  It is easy to imagine the power surging just under the surface.

Frostbite Regatta

Crossing
Acrylic on canvas

About a year ago I got this idea stuck in my head.  I wanted to capture images of sail boats while on another boat so that the paintings I painted would have a real feeling of movement and energy.  Well after a lot of talk with people and 3 trips to the coast I was finally able to make some headway.  In November I was able to ride on the safety boat in the “Frostbite Regatta” sponsored by the Cape Fear Yacht Club in Southport NC.  I came away with some wonderful pictures and enough material to keep me painting until spring when I go back for the first regatta of 2012.  This painting is the first in the series from the regatta and I will post more as I go along.  I hope you enjoy it.

"Rust Bucket"

On a cold November day last year I saw this fishing boat. At first it looked so old that I thought it wasnt in use. The closer I got the more I could all the modern electronic equipment. I guess you can't judge a book by its cover.

This painting is from a group of photos I took while on a trip to the outer banks. The boat is the same one in my painting "Captain Skylark". There was something wonderfull in the sbstract Yin-Yang form where the hull and keel meet. I hope you enjoy it.

Several people had mentioned that I should paint the Lucky Strike towers. I thought it was a good idea but I just couldn't find the view, angle, lighting..... you get the picture. One day in December I was driving behind the American Tobacco Campus on the track side and happened to look over between two of the buildings and  WOW!! I pulled over and climbed up on the tracks to get this shot. I love it and I hope you enjoy it.

Over Thanksgiving Catherine and I were able to spend some time at the coast. During our meanderings I came across this shrimper up on stands in dry dock. The angles you can get are just awesome. Pair that with a wild November sky and you have magic.

If you drive out Old Oxford Hwy from Roxboro Rd you pass an old store lovingly called the "Cat" store. For years I have passed this store and thought to myself  "I should paint this" but never did.... Time passed and every time I went by, the same thoughts. In the fall I once again drove by and noticed that the old store seemed to be getting fragile and I realized I better do it now. This is the way I want to remember it, age and beauty together as one.

Well on the 20th of this month I had my "Print release" party for my painting "Forgotten" It was a lot of fun and I want to thank everyone that came out. I love the idea of a party and Art in the same venue. There are several people that helped to make it possible: Richard Dederikson and Charles Guidry came and saved my life by helping me hang the show and creating lighting for the paintings. Just brilliant!!! My wife Catherine and daughter Charity made a wonderful spread of food for all to enjoy.

Finally I MUST say a tremendous THANK YOU!!! to Ali Linn. All the frames on my paintings were made and finished by her. She is a true artisan with a tremendous talent and I am blessed to have her as my friend as well as my frame maker.

"Forgotten" at the fair

I decided to put this painting in the State Fair this year because I am trying to do things differently this time around. It is easy to put things up on line and show your friends but another thing altogether to put it out for public critique. I know...... I will never hear the comments,,,,BUT I know they are being made. Maybe I'm a bit warped but thats OK, in my brain it makes sense. Anyway here I am with "Forgotten"

Also...I have gotten a number of inquires on the possibility of producing a print of “Forgotten” I have decided to do one but wanted to let everyone know the particulars of the print

The edition will only consist of 75 prints and 5 artist proofs.
The price is $150.00 and is guarantied only till April 30th.after that date prices are subject to change at anytime.

"Liberty Warehouse"

About ten years ago I had the privilege of being asked to help out with the painting of some of the sets for the Durham Savoyard's production of "The Sorcerer"

Every year since, cold and sometimes wet, Saturday mornings in February have been the harbinger of spring and another wonderful performance of a Gilbert and Sullivan Operetta.

These times have given me some of my best friends and comrades. They are really a stellar group of people that love music, theater and performing, on stage and behind it!!!!

2010 was the last year to build sets in the Liberty Warehouse and with all the wonderful growth going on in Durham I wasn't sure how much longer this sign would be here. Soooooo this is for remembering.....

I dedicate this painting to the Teckies and singers that spent a cold morning or a late night at the "Liberty Warehouse"

Thanks
