About Me

My photo
Durham, NC
After graduating from the University of Mobile in 1985 I started a career as an artist. My life consisted of Easel painting, Murals, Trompe l'oeil and faux finishes. I did this for 18 years until reaching a point of creatively burning out. I painted nothing of substance for almost 7 years. In January of 2010 things happened to open my eyes to the beauty around me and a deep desire to paint again. This blog will be dedicated to my new work. Paintings that are for me and my pleasure and the pleasure of others and not for a pay check. My hope is that this will help to keep the work fresh and of true vision.

Well on the 20th of this month I had my "Print release" party for my painting "Forgotten" It was a lot of fun and I want to thank everyone that came out. I love the idea of a party and Art in the same venue. There are several people that helped to make it possible: Richard Dederikson and Charles Guidry came and saved my life by helping me hang the show and creating lighting for the paintings. Just brilliant!!! My wife Catherine and daughter Charity made a wonderful spread of food for all to enjoy.

Finally I MUST say a tremendous THANK YOU!!! to Ali Linn. All the frames on my paintings were made and finished by her. She is a true artisan with a tremendous talent and I am blessed to have her as my friend as well as my frame maker.

"Forgotten" at the fair

I decided to put this painting in the State Fair this year because I am trying to do things differently this time around. It is easy to put things up on line and show your friends but another thing altogether to put it out for public critique. I know...... I will never hear the comments,,,,BUT I know they are being made. Maybe I'm a bit warped but thats OK, in my brain it makes sense. Anyway here I am with "Forgotten"

Also...I have gotten a number of inquires on the possibility of producing a print of “Forgotten” I have decided to do one but wanted to let everyone know the particulars of the print
The size is 14 x 26 The type of print is a Giclee which, is a fine art term, associated with extremely high quality prints using fade-resistant, archival inks and substrates More info http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gicl%C3%A9e  The
The edition will only consist of 75 prints and 5 artist proofs.
The price is $150.00 and is guarantied only till April 30th.after that date prices are subject to change at anytime.
If anyone is interested in having one just email me at info@tonyaldermanarts.com

"Liberty Warehouse"

About ten years ago I had the privilege of being asked to help out with the painting of some of the sets for the Durham Savoyard's production of "The Sorcerer"

Every year since, cold and sometimes wet, Saturday mornings in February have been the harbinger of spring and another wonderful performance of a Gilbert and Sullivan Operetta.

These times have given me some of my best friends and comrades. They are really a stellar group of people that love music, theater and performing, on stage and behind it!!!!

2010 was the last year to build sets in the Liberty Warehouse and with all the wonderful growth going on in Durham I wasn't sure how much longer this sign would be here. Soooooo this is for remembering.....

I dedicate this painting to the Teckies and singers that spent a cold morning or a late night at the "Liberty Warehouse"

Thanks

"Little Shrimper"

About 10 years ago I was cruising the back roads north of Oriental NC and came across this this little boat mored at a dock next to a small bridge. It just seemed to represent so many things, peace, age, solitude, freedom, stubbornness, more things than I can count. Three times I put this drawing on a board, spent countless hours processing how I wanted to paint it but was never able to start the piece. One night last week I had a fitful sleep and woke up in the middle of the night totally knowing how to do it.

Well I finished it Sunday night and am ready for the next piece.
I will scour the nooks and carnies of downtown the rest of the week.

"912 N Mangum"

I inspected this house back in 2009. You could tell that at one time it was a stately reminder of grace and beauty that was a joy to behold. At the time of the inspection the problems in and under the house were daunting. I assumed it would fall in on itself from neglect. In April of 2010 I was called to inspect the same house again but this time the buyer had a spark in her eyes when she looked at this elegant lady. She had vision! As I left the inspection that day (it still had the same problems) I looked up at the top of the columns and saw (in my mind) a bit of the former grandeur of this beauty. This painting represents my feeling of that morning. The house, by the way, is even now being totally restored.

This is one of the reasons I love Durham!!!

"Forgotten"

This is a painting that I actually started 7 years ago. I thought I had finished it but it never felt right. Then a couple of months ago I was looking at it with Catherine and she just mentioned that it looked a little heavy. Voila'!!!! I knew what had to happen. I took out the entire background and and started it over and suddenly it all fell into proper perspective. Sooo I have decided to call it finished in 2010 so it is part of my present work. I hope you enjoy

"Flurries"

We had a bit of snow this winter. One morning in February, in the midst of snow flurries, I was on my way into town headed south on Mangum St. As I crossed the Downtown Loop I happened to look up and saw the Spire of the Trinity United Methodist Church. Snow was caught in the cracks of the spire. I was totally captivated by the sky, the movement the mass the power. In this painting I strive to capture that emotion of nature as this piece of metal and stone stand as a monument.

"Beyu' Morning"

One early morning in January of 2010 I left the Beyu' Caffe with a steaming cup of coffee in my hand, happy to be downtown in my beautiful city of Durham. I sat the coffee on the roof of my car so I could unlock the car door and happened to turn around and saw this image of Chapel Hill St. reflected in the windows of the Caffe. That image awakened my need to paint that had been dormant for nearly 7 years. In a way this painting represents a rebirth for me. A new vision. For that I will forever be thankful.

Duke Garden series #1 "The Cafe"

This is the first painting of my Duke Garden series. The Cafe is tucked away in a corner near the Wisteria covered Gazebo. During the cool mornings of Autumn the aroma of fresh coffee beckons you to stop.
